U.S. SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS HEALTH INSURANCE INDIVIDUAL MANDATE

On Thursday, June 28, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the individual insurance mandate within the Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act (PPACA), better known as the Healthcare Reform bill.  In a 5-4 decision on the mandate, the Court stated that Congress has the authority to enforce the healthcare law’s individual mandate, which will require most U.S. taxpayers to buy health insurance or pay a penalty.  Chief Justice John Roberts who wrote the majority opinion for the court said the mandate could be deemed constitutional because it can reasonably be read as a tax.  To view the full opinion, please see the following link:  http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/11pdf/11-393c3a2.pdf
